Background of the Study
Febrile convulsions are one of the most common neurological emergencies in young children, often triggered by fever, and are typically seen in children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. While most febrile convulsions are self-limiting, appropriate management is essential to ensure the child's safety, minimize potential complications, and reduce the recurrence of seizures. Nurses play a crucial role in the initial assessment and management of febrile convulsions in the emergency or pediatric care settings. In Nigeria, there are established national and international guidelines for managing febrile convulsions, which emphasize timely intervention, careful monitoring, and appropriate use of antipyretic medications.
At Jigawa State General Hospital, one of the largest healthcare facilities in the region, nurses are often the first to encounter children presenting with febrile convulsions. The management of these cases requires swift action, knowledge of guidelines, and a clear understanding of the medical protocols involved. Despite the existence of these guidelines, studies have shown that nurses may not always adhere strictly to them due to factors such as inadequate training, insufficient resources, and high workload pressures. This study aims to evaluate the adherence of nurses at Jigawa State General Hospital to standard guidelines in the management of febrile convulsions, with the goal of improving clinical outcomes and enhancing patient safety.
Statement of the Problem
Febrile convulsions, while typically benign, can lead to adverse outcomes such as aspiration, brain injury, or even death if not appropriately managed. At Jigawa State General Hospital, there has been concern about whether nurses consistently follow the standard guidelines for managing febrile convulsions, which could lead to suboptimal care. Given the lack of recent research on this subject in the hospital, it is important to investigate how well nurses adhere to the established protocols and the factors that may influence their practice.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess nurses' adherence to standard guidelines in the management of febrile convulsions at Jigawa State General Hospital.
2. To identify barriers to the adherence of nurses to the standard management guidelines for febrile convulsions at Jigawa State General Hospital.
3. To determine the impact of adherence to management guidelines on patient outcomes in febrile convulsions at Jigawa State General Hospital.
Research Questions
1. To what extent do nurses at Jigawa State General Hospital adhere to standard guidelines in the management of febrile convulsions?
2. What factors influence nurses' adherence to the management guidelines for febrile convulsions at Jigawa State General Hospital?
3. What is the relationship between adherence to management guidelines and patient outcomes in febrile convulsions at Jigawa State General Hospital?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at Jigawa State General Hospital have a moderate to high level of adherence to the standard guidelines in the management of febrile convulsions.
2. Factors such as training, resources, and workload significantly affect nurses' adherence to febrile convulsion management guidelines.
3. Higher adherence to management guidelines is associated with improved patient outcomes in febrile convulsion cases at Jigawa State General Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the pediatric and emergency departments at Jigawa State General Hospital. It will evaluate their knowledge, attitudes, and adherence to guidelines in managing febrile convulsions. The study is limited by factors such as potential recall bias from nurses, possible variability in practice across different shifts, and the limitations of a single-site study, which may not be generalizable to other healthcare facilities.
Definitions of Terms
• Febrile Convulsions: Seizures that occur in young children as a result of fever, often in response to an infection or other causes of elevated body temperature.
• Standard Guidelines: The established medical protocols and procedures for managing febrile convulsions, which are widely recognized in clinical practice.
• Adherence: The extent to which nurses follow established protocols and guidelines in the clinical management of febrile convulsions.
